Acadian Cast Iron Cookout – Fire History Feast
There is a quiet elegance in gathering around an open flame—the glow of embers, the rhythm of preparation, and the unmistakable depth of flavour that only fire can impart. Over The Coals invites you to step into this enduring tradition, where culinary craft, local ingredients, and cultural heritage come together in a thoughtfully curated evening.
With Rustico Bay as the backdrop and set within the natural beauty of Rustico’s Farmer’s Bank and Doucet House Museum properties, this experience offers a return to simplicity—where food is prepared with intention, and every element reflects a deep connection to place.
A Hands-On Culinary Tradition
The evening begins at the source: the fire itself. Guests are guided through the art of building a proper cooking fire and preparing a coal bed, an essential foundation for traditional outdoor cuisine. From there, you’ll take part in time-honoured techniques—mixing, shaping, and baking bannock, and churning butter from scratch.
This immersive approach offers not only a deeper appreciation for the craft, but a tangible connection to generations past.
A Menu Rooted in Place
The feast celebrates the richness of local land and sea, with a menu that is both rustic and thoughtfully composed:
- House-made sausage, prepared from a signature recipe and served on freshly baked rolls
- Steamed mussels, harvested from the waters of Rustico Bay
- Seasonal desserts highlighting local produce and fruit from the orchard and garden
Each course is an expression of Island terroir—fresh, honest, and quietly exceptional.
An Accompaniment of Acadian Music
As the evening unfolds, live traditional Acadian music provides an evocative backdrop. The melodies—at once lively and deeply expressive—lend a sense of continuity and celebration, enriching the atmosphere without overwhelming its intimacy.
